This community-engaged project follows descendants and residents of the Tenth Street Historic District in Dallas, Texas, as they work to preserve the legacy of this historic freedom colony and fight for a voice in shaping its future.

The project centers the living memory and perspectives of Tenth Street Freedman’s Town residents and descendants through oral history interviews, GIS mapping, photography, digital storytelling, film, art, and genealogical research.

By documenting contemporary community experiences and cultural contributions, the project highlights key moments and community leaders—past and present—that have shaped Tenth Street.
